Japan Railway ticket

If you take a railway, you have a chance to see 2 type of railway ticket.

One is the normal railway ticket and this is the traditional type.
You can see the station name to get on and the ticket fee. So when you take a subway or local train such as in Tokyo, you will buy this type of ticket.

The other is the special express ticket.
This is the addtional ticket when you take a express train such as Shinkansen. You can see the train name, departure time, station name of departure and destination, car No. and sheet No. if you buy the reserved seat.

You may buy the reserved seat ticket if you take a Shinkansen because it's high speed train so it's not good idea if the free sheet are full occupancy.

Sometimes the above ticket are separated and sometimes it's combined to one ticket. When you pass through the ticket gate to take a Shinkansen, you have to put both tickets together if the tickets are separated type.

After taking a Shinkansen, if you go to a local train from a Shinkansen, you have to put the both tickets into the ticket gate together and you can get the only railway ticket after passing the ticket gate. No need the special express ticket any more.

Here are some samples of the Railway tickets of JR East.

If you are in Tokyo, you may see not only traditional paper ticket but also you may see the card ticket called Suica or Pasmo. These are convenience, so pls try.
